Description
The Checkerboard Red Turquoise Discus displays a beautiful checkerboard pattern with powder blue clouds and red lines striated through the body. This discus fish is a descendent to the German Schmidt-Focke #14 red turquoise. They have a very round body and will grow up to seven inches. This is an outstanding fish for the hobbyist that would like to try breeding, as they are consistently prolific. Once they start spawning, they don’t quit. More often than not, I have seen this strain continue a spawning cycle for over a year before resting. So, if you would like a beautifully striped discus fish that does not give up on raising a brood of fry, this should be first on your list.
Discus fish are native to the slow and warm tropical waters of the Amazon River. They eat a variety of fresh water shrimp, worms, insects, and aquatic vegetation. In the wild, discus fish colors are limited to a few varieties which are earth tone in color. This helps to protect them from predators by allowing them to blend into their natural habitat. Through selective cross breeding, tank raised discus fish are now available to the hobbyist in a wide range of vivid colors, like the Checkerboard Red Turquoise Discus.
