Description

The Red Eagle discus has a turquoise background with significant red stripes which give this fish a dazzling appearance. The red stripes are not as significant in the young and they appear as though they are brown in color. As the fish matures the stripes become bright red as the turquoise background starts to nicely reflect the color of the stripes. The emperor red discus has a round, flat body. The fish’s pectoral and dorsal fins extend all the way towards the back. Their red stripes glitter in the light making this fish a pleasure to watch.

The Red Eagle discus is popular mostly due to its large size and beautiful body shape. The fish is also very active thus making it a marvel to see in a home aquarium. There have been various crosses of this fish all of which are aimed at producing varieties that have alternate color shades.

Discus fish are native to the slow and warm tropical waters of the Amazon River. They eat a variety of fresh water shrimp, worms, insects, and aquatic vegetation. In the wild, discus fish colors are limited to a few varieties which are earth tone in color. This helps to protect them from predators by allowing them to blend into their natural habitat. Through selective cross breeding, tank raised discus fish are now available to the hobbyist in a wide range of vivid colors, like the Emperor Red discus fish.
